Newton-Wellesley Hospital is a comprehensive medical center located in Newton, MA with more than 3,500 employees. It is a member of Partners HealthCare, a network founded by Massachusetts General Hospital and Brigham and Women’s Hospital. A long-standing MedTouch client, when NWH’s Intranet site came up for review, they invited MedTouch to assess the possibilities of delivering a new solution.
At the outset of this project, Newton-Wellesley Hospital had an outdated intranet site that had survived for over twelve years. It was infrequently used, as it lacked useful information architecture, comprehensive search capability, content, and design, and was difficult to update. The site was also designed for desktops only and NWH clinicians were in the process of getting new tablets, making their experience even worse.
Through a thorough process of review, planning, and implementation, MedTouch was able to work with Newton-Wellesley to achieve the stated goals and ensure that the components that were useful and valued, such as the Nursing Team Resources, were maintained and the areas that were not as successful – IA, relevant content, search functionality and CMS capabilities – were vastly improved.
Newton-Wellesley Hospital’s intranet now functions as an efficient, user friendly site communication tool. With updated IA, new design, new content and successful implementation of healthcare-specific modules, including Policies and Procedures module.
The site is also responsive so it can be easily used by internal clinicians who primarily use tablets. MedTouch also developed a custom report for the Pathology team can easily manage policies and ensure compliance.

Newton-Wellesley Hospital’s new intranet is a robust, reliable tool that fosters communication and instills confidence in its users, significantly increasing the number of users. Information is now easily posted and updated and with advanced search capabilities, users are able to quickly locate relevant information.
The Intranet is built on Sitecore and allows them publishing control and consistency unlike their old platform. Updates are easily made, including true “what you see is what you get” editing. Multiple content types, such as PDFs, Word documents, and other files, are simply managed and made available to Intranet users.
Finally, the Policies + Procedures module now allows them to roll back in time to verify changes in policies across time – a much needed feature to ensure compliance –and to ensure ongoing governance of critical content, a Joint Commission requirement.
